Roach 101
Roaches carry and transmit diseases and dangerous bacteria, as well as contaminating food and food prep areas.
There are a few types of cockroaches in New York that invade and live inside of homes and businesses.
A cockroaches’ appearance can vary by species; some species can fly, others have wings but can’t fly and some don’t have wings at all. Most are brownish to black in color, have antennae, and six legs. Some species are quite small while others can grow to be over 2 inches in length.
Cockroaches often enter into homes and businesses through cracks in the foundation, exterior walls, or underneath of doors while searching for food and water sources. They may also be accidentally introduced inside of a package, box or other like item.
Once inside cockroaches can be found hiding in dark damp areas like basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms. Other common areas include kitchen drawers, cabinets, and behind large appliances.
Cockroaches will contaminate food sources, kitchen utensils, and cookware with their urine and feces. They are responsible for transmitting over 33 types of bacteria and their shed skins can trigger severe allergic reactions in some people, especially young children.
Before entering into your home or business most cockroaches were foraging for food in garbage piles, dumpsters, sewers, drain pipes, and animal carcasses; because of this they should be eliminated from your home as quickly as possible to prevent serious illness.
